Hello there! I’m Kaitlyn and I am the owner & founder of Highland Music Studio. Before living in Atlanta, I grew up in Macon, Georgia. I began piano lessons at age eight, with inspiration from my grandmother and great-grandmother, who were also piano teachers. By the time I graduated high school, I also learned other instruments such as clarinet, trumpet, guitar and ukulele.
I entered college on the Johns Hopkins Piano Scholarship and earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia studying Music Education and Piano Performance. I studied under concert pianists Edward Eikner, Gila Goldstein and Richard Zimdars. Since completion of my degree, I’ve been certified for ages K-12 in music as well as trained in the Music Together curriculum. I taught music classes for 3 years in public schools, which included elementary music, middle and high school choirs.
Starting Highland Music Studio was a wild ride! While I was a full-time public school music teacher, I started Highland Music Studio after my work hours. I always had a dream to have my own music school because I saw so many issues with how music lessons were being taught. So many kids and adults found music lessons “boring” and “tedious” and ultimately quit. I wanted to create a place where students could learn music in a fun and fulfilling way.
By the summer of 2016, I had a large wait list of students and resigned from my public school teaching position. In 2017, we hired more teachers. Today, we have hundreds of students taking lessons. I believe we had quick growth because we teach music in fun and creative ways & break the status quo of how music lessons are being taught. This place has become special to so many people. We are excited to continue impacting our community in a positive way.
