We’ve all been there. There’s that one subject or skill that you know you could have crushed! If only your teacher had been kinder, more positive, tougher, more flexible etc. etc. etc. We could even say that the teacher matters more than what’s being taught! If you’re considering music lessons, start here to make the best decision.
Music Taste
While it’s not a requirement that you agree with your teacher on what’s good and what isn’t, the experience is certainly more fun if you do! Your teacher is more likely to know the songs you want to learn and have probably taught them before. They’re also more likely to recommend songs that you’ll enjoy learning – hello, new favorite song! If you enjoy similar music, you’ll be pretty similar in personality and mesh well as you learn your instrument.
Experience
Many students may feel secure in learning from someone who knows their instrument front, back, and sideways. It’s common to feel more trust in someone who has been practicing their craft since they, too, were a child. For others, the idea of learning piano from a concert pianist with decades of experience can be daunting. When someone has been playing an instrument for that long, they might have lost touch with the basics! It’s important to consider what level of experience you want your teacher to bring to lessons and find someone who can match that energy.
Skill Level and Speciality
There are as many ways to play an instrument as there are songs to play. A classically minded pianist may stumble over the finer points of jazz music, and a blues player may not do their best work on rock songs. Other musicians love playing a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. If you have a certain genre in mind, look for a teacher who is not only experienced with their instrument, but experienced with the style of playing you want to do.
