When you signed your child up for piano lessons, you likely had more than music in mind. Music lessons are known to boost focus, improve behavior, and be a great creative outlet. In the right place, they can be all that and more! But that’s the key: the most well intentioned piano lessons can go completely awry in the wrong environment. Not all lessons are created equal and the wrong setup can even turn your child away from music for good.

If they’re not interested in piano, maybe it’s not the right instrument.

While some students fall in love with piano right away, maybe then were even begging for lessons before signing up, that’s not the case with everyone. That doesn’t mean music isn’t right for them, it might just mean that they need to try something new. It’s important to choose a studio with a wide variety of offerings so that this bump in the road doesn’t turn into a total detour. Maybe your child wants to give guitar a try, or sing for a bit – every child connects with music in a different way and forcing them to stick with lessons that they dread can leave them frustrated. We help young musicians explore their interests and find what really fits.

If their teacher doesn’t meet them where they are, we do.

One-size-fits-all music lessons can be the result of studios who are more interested in turning a profit than inspiring young musicians. We believe that every child is unique, so every lesson should be, too. Our teachers are trained to meet students where they are in their interests, learning styles, and communication preferences. We’re flexible and can adapt in the moment so each lesson feels motivating, not overwhelming.

If there’s no structure or method, that’s a problem – we have both.

Flexibility doesn’t mean we sacrifice structure or standards. It means that the student’s progress is measurable and each milestone is a celebration. We built our curriculum with proven method books, appropriate materials, and a clear path towards one’s individual goals. This way students know what’s expected of them, stay on track, and keep moving forward.

If the lessons aren’t aligned with your goals, we make time to understand them.

Every lesson ends with a brief check-in with the caregivers so we can always be aligned with what’s next for the student. We share the day’s challenges and accomplishments, what to work on at home, and touch base about studio housekeeping. You never have to worry about how to communicate with your child’s teacher, or be in the dark about what they’re working on. Our approach isn’t about checking off boxes, it’s about being united in supporting your child to be the best they can be.

At Highland Music Studio, we believe that music lessons should inspire, not discourage. If something’s not working in your current setup, it’s okay to make a change. Let’s work together to find the right path for your child, so we can inspire them to be more than they thought they could be.
